Mt. Cuba Center is a non-profit horticultural institution in northern Delaware located on nearly 600 acres.

Mt. Cuba is dedicated to the study, conservation, and appreciation of plants native to the Appalachian Piedmont Region through garden display, education, and research. Their woodland wildflower gardens are recognized as the regions finest examples.

The Colonial Revival-style residence, completed in 1937, was designed by architects Victorine and Samuel Homsey. In 2003, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it serves as the administrative and educational facility for Mt. Cuba Center.

The renovation and transformation that took shape at Mt. Cuba Center was careful to address both the historical nature of the residence for a new use as an educational facility as well as addressing the changes to allow the structure to meet new commercial building codes. All of these objectives were achieved with sensitivity to the past but with the eye to the future and the valuable programs and initiatives that abound at Mt. Cuba.

The interiors at Mt. Cuba complemented the architectural backdrop of some of the original rooms and supported the mission of new spaces that were programmed for the facility. The original Living and Dining Rooms were transformed into Multi-Purpose meeting and conference spaces while original Bedrooms were reconstructed for use as conference rooms, executive offices and Board Room.

For Contract Environments, Inc. this project represented a premier assignment in our project portfolio and while we maintained control over the interior finishes and furniture, there was very positive feedback and input with the client throughout the project. The goal was to achieve a seamless interior solution suited to meet the needs of the organization.
Visiting groups use all areas of the grounds and facilities with meetings and educational forums tailored to their needs. The setting is a masterpiece of architecture and interiors surrounded by acres of idyllic gardens, woodlands and exceptional species of horticultural majesty.
